Two people returned to the parked vehicle. One of them, a 39-year-old man known to police, was taken into custody.

The vehicle was seized and towed. A search warrant was executed on the vehicle, and police found a loaded firearm and a jerry can full of gasoline inside.

"We often see stolen vehicles connected to other crimes, including shootings where a suspect vehicle is located on fire at another location," said Surrey RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Vanessa Munn in a statement.

She said the actions of the off-duty police officer likely prevented further acts of violence.
