Longtime meteorologist retires

Jerry Tracey has bid farewell to WVTM13 and is heading into retirement. Everyone here at WVTM is sad to see him go, but Stephanie Walker may be feeling the loss a little more. She's worked with Jerry for 22 years. She was a young, rookie meteorologist when she arrived in Birmingham at the turn of the century. And Stephanie has looked up to the chief since then. Over the years she's grown close to Jerry — the real Jerry. Stephanie says, "A lot of people don't get to see the side of Jerry that I get to see during commercial breaks or off-air and he is really, genuinely funny. He has a great sense of humor, he can laugh at most things, the problem is he's got a hard time getting it back together and sometimes that'll create a problem if you get him laughing during a commercial break because now he's got to go on TV." There have been plenty of laughs over the years, but as funny as Jerry can be, he's even more kind. Stephanie says she'll especially miss that part of her friend. "So I work mornings and Jerry works night so our paths don't cross but do you know he leaves me a note every night before he leaves? He leaves me a note, whether it's about weather or 'have a good weekend' or asking about the kids. I can't tell you how many notes I've gotten from him. I'm really going to miss that."
