ALERT: County issues safety warning after fuel-filled gas cans hit recycling plant - Point/Plover Metro Wire

PLOVER – Portage County Solid Waste has issued a safety warning after three gas cans, still containing fuel, were improperly disposed of in the county’s recycling program.

The incident posed a significant fire risk, as gasoline soaked the recyclables, and any spark could have ignited a dangerous fire.

No injuries were reported, and both the truck driver and facility staff were unharmed.

But Portage Co. Solid Waste Director Amanda Haffele stressed the severity of the situation and urged residents to exercise caution when disposing of hazardous materials.

“If you are moving or unsure about how to dispose of leftover chemicals, batteries, or other items, please contact our office for assistance,” Haffele said.

The county provides options for safely disposing of household hazardous materials through its Household Hazardous Waste program, which operates from March through November.

Residents can call (715) 346-1931 or visit the county’s website to schedule an appointment. For those moving during the winter months, year-round disposal services are available through the Marathon County Solid Waste program.

For more information, contact Amanda Haffele at (715) 345-5970.
