In Jerry Stackhouse and Juwan Howard, can the NBA get the college coaching carousel spinning again?

When it comes to major job changes, the college basketball coaching carousel had been looking like it was done spinning.

After about a week and a half or so of inactivity and with all the major posts filled, the NBA may have something to say about the carousel and there's a possibility that we could still see a big job — or two — end up opening.

Current Vanderbilt head coach Jerry Stackhouse is a name that keeps coming up as a possible replacement for the Detroit Pistons job, with Dwane Casey moving from the sideline to the front office in Detroit. There appears to be some legitimate smoke to the fire.

Stackhouse is very well regarded in NBA circles and numerous sources tell 247Sports that he's indeed very interested in the Pistons opening. His ability to draw up plays is highly thought of and he impressed many during his time as an assistant alongside Casey with the Toronto Raptors — he was also the G League coach of the year leading the 905 Raptors to a league championship in 2017 — and then coached with the Memphis Grizzlies before landing the Vanderbilt job. With nearly 20 years of experience in the NBA under his belt (including five seasons with the Pistons), many believe the 48-year-old Stackhouse is the kind of coach who can command the respect in a locker room full of young players like Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey. The Pistons have the best lottery odds to land the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft (otherwise known as the Wembanyama sweepstakes).

Stackhouse has shown tremendous growth as a college coach. He guided Vanderbilt to 22 wins, an appearance in the NIT and was named SEC Coach of the Year during the 2022-23 season. While most coaches have been waist deep in the Transfer Portal since the end of the season, there has been some talk from sources close to the program that Stackhouse hasn't seemed all that interested in making portal recruiting a priority. Is it hearsay or is it a sign that he could be planning his exit?

Also keep an eye on the Toronto Raptors. The rumor is that current head coach Nick Nurse could be on the move to Houston once the season ends. Stackhouse has experienced success in the Toronto system.

Stackhouse isn't the only current college head coach getting some recent buzz either. Michigan's Juwan Howard, the guy he beat in the NIT this year (and a former teammate of his with the Dallas Mavericks), is getting some buzz for the Pistons post and other jobs as well.

Like Stackhouse, Howard is highly regarded and well-respected in NBA circles — he comes with the LeBron James stamp of approval — and we are just a year removed from the Lakers exploring him as a coach. While no former offer was ever made, many believe Howard would have had a legitimate chance at the job if he wouldn't have been preparing to coach not one, but two, of his sons on the 2022-23 Michigan team. With his youngest Jett Howard off to the NBA after his freshman year along with big man Hunter Dickinson hitting the portal and sophomore Kobe Bufkin's surprise departure for the NBA, there is behind-the-scenes chatter that Howard is much more open to a potential change than he was this time a year ago.

This is Howard's biggest offseason, as echoed by 247Sports' Isaac Trotter, who writes: "Would it surprise anyone if the Pistons brass reached out to Howard to gauge his interest? Will the Michigan Man rectify this plight? Or should he jump to try his luck with a Cade Cunningham-Jaden Ivey backcourt?"

Unlike Stackhouse, Howard has been very active in the transfer portal, nabbing No. 10 transfer prospect Caleb Love (of North Carolina), plus former Alabama guard Nimari Burnett and former Seton Hall forward Tray Jackson.

Howard was a member of Michigan's Fab Five and spent 22 seasons in the NBA, the last few of them as the elder statesman of the title-winning Miami Heat.

Time will tell how much, if any, of these rumors have real legs to them but it looks like the NBA may end up dictating whether the college coaching carousel is done spinning or not.
