A stolen car was found in Surrey last month with a loaded gun and a jerry can full of gasoline inside, according to police.

The stolen vehicle was discovered on May 24 at about 10 a.m. by the detachment's Auto Crime Target Team and Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT), reads a release from Cpl. Vanessa Munn of the Surrey RCMP.

A report from an off-duty cop came in about a "suspicious vehicle" on 104 Avenue in the 13800-block of Surrey.

The officer noticed the plates on the car were mismatched, which led to the report.

"We often see stolen vehicles connected to other crimes, including shootings where a suspect vehicle is located on fire at another location," Munn said.

Once police were on scene, they learned that the unoccupied vehicle allegedly had a licence plate that had been reported stolen.

"Two individuals returned to the parked vehicle and a 39-year-old man, believed to be the driver, who is known to police was transported to Surrey RCMP cells and held in custody. The second individual was released pending further investigation," Munn said.

The vehicle was found to have been stolen in Coquitlam in November 2022. The car was seized and police obtained a search warrant, which led to the discovery of a loaded firearm and a jerry can filled with gasoline inside the vehicle.

"In this case, an off-duty police officer followed their instincts and reported the suspicious vehicle, leading to the arrest, firearm seizure, and very likely the prevention of further acts of violence."
