Houston man dies in Martin County oil tank crash

Gavin Stone Popowitz, 27, died after his car veered off the road, hit an oil tank, and caught fire in Martin County.

MARTIN COUNTY — A 27-year-old man is dead following a single-vehicle collision with an oil storage tank.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported Gavin Stone Popowitz of Houston was pronounced dead at the scene of a fatal incident that occurred at approximately 1 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, along County Road 3200, four miles west of Farm-to-Market Road 1212. According to the DPS report, Popowitz was driving a 2011 Buick Encore.

The preliminary information from the DPS report revealed that the Buick was traveling at a high rate of speed when it veered off the roadway. The Buick rolled over before it struck an oil storage tank and caught on fire.

Popowitz was pronounced dead at the scene. It's believed the crash happened at about 1 a.m.; however, the crash scene was not discovered until the afternoon.

This crash remains under investigation. No further information has been released at this time.
