In Jerry Stackhouse and Juwan Howard, can the NBA get the college coaching carousel spinning again?

Roster building is never quite complete in the transfer portal era of college football. That's something Ole Miss emphasized over the weekend when it landed a commitment from UTSA's all-time leading receiver, Zakhari Franklin, adding to a 2023 transfer class that ranks fifth nationally.

Franklin's commitment dispelled a lingering offseason storyline that Ole Miss couldn't quite get the wide receiver position correct. After a few high-profile misses in the portal plus a pair of commitments gone wrong — Shane Hooks flipped to Auburn and Chris Marshall was dismissed — the Rebels looked like they’d fail to get junior QB Jaxson Dart needed outside help, assuming Dart wins the job.

Now, the Rebels have two transfer leading men at the position with four-star Tre Harris (Louisiana Tech) and Franklin, both of whom were first-team all-conference selections last season in C-USA. Franklin ranks as the No. 21 receiver in the portal, while Harris isn't far behind at No. 26. They're both top-150 portal prospects.

More importantly, the is instantly one of the more intriguing in college football: Not only in pursuit of the idea of whether dominant Group of Five receivers can translate ably to the SEC, but what their additions mean for Ole Miss’ offense.

One thing is for sure: There will be a lot 50-50 balls thrown in Oxford this year.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Franklin isn't overly athletic for his position. What he is, though, is a contested-catch machine. Franklin may not separate like an elite Power Five receiver, but he caught 16 contested passes last year, according to PFF, which was the eighth-most in college football.

And when the ball does get in his hands, Franklin makes the most of it. Franklin forced 20 missed tackles last season (seventh nationally) and produced more first downs than all but two FBS receivers. This is despite Franklin's average depth of target being a humble 8.9 yards.

Franklin rarely worked in the slot for UTSA. He made a living off dominating short to intermediate routes, especially against zone, and making plays after the catch.

At 6-foot-2, 204 pounds, Harris is a converted high school quarterback who has many of the same strengths as Franklin. Harris also reeled in 16 contested catches last season, according to PFF, which is a skill he's showcased throughout his career.

Harris didn't make nearly as many plays in the open field as Franklin, but he's shown a plus ability to stretch the field vertically, especially against man-to-man coverage. Harris, who excels in jump-ball situations, had nine catches of 30-plus yards last season, which ranked 20th nationally.

Together, Franklin and Harris are an interesting pairing of outside receivers, a much different vintage than what Dart sampled last season at the helm of the Rebels’ offense.

Ole Miss didn't lack for shots downfield last season with Malik Heath and Jonathan Mingo as its leading pass catchers. The Rebels ranked in the top 30 nationally in passes of 20- and 30-plus yards. Some of that is due to the skill sets of both players (Mingo was particularly dangerous and is an excellent route runner), but the Rebels also scheme a ton of plays open in Lane Kiffin's hybrid veer-and-shoot system.

Mingo and Heath weren't asked to make a lot of plays in the open field (15 missed forced tackles between them) nor did they make a lot of contested catches. Ole Miss’ wide receivers reeled in only 19 contested catches all year with a low success rate (39.5%).

That's going to change with Franklin and Harris in the fold. Dart, already a bit of a gunslinger in nature, will be able to throw up the ball more often and have his receivers bail him out from time to time.

Ole Miss’ offense won't look measurably different in 2023 because of a pair of transfer wide receivers. Quinshon Judkins will remain the face of the offense — with an excellent O-line controlling things up front — but it could be different enough to give Dart an edge.

Dart didn't always have a safety blanket last season. Now, he has two of the best 50-50 ball receivers in the country. That makes Franklin, in concert with Harris, a transformative June addition.
